Beginning Arithmetic
Grade 1
Third Edition (2011)

The basic concepts of this revised curriculum are much the same as in the previous version (2nd edition, 1991). However, this revision provides improved Bible tone, offers more variety in artwork, and gives more drill in some weak areas. Complete practice sheet sets are available for the revised curriculum, eliminating the need for extensive copying.

This course is designed to start at the beginning of the first grade and consists of 170 lessons bound in two workbook with one tear-out sheet for each lesson. No unit or chapter divisions are given. Money, measures, place value, fractions, and so forth are taught throughout the year while addition and subtraction facts are being drilled.

A small tablet of 72 speed drills provides timed practice of addition and subtractions facts. These drills begin at lesson 28 and continue through lesson 170. Speed drills are to be given every other day. Directions for using this tablet are on page 6 of the teacher's manual.

Beginning Arithmetic

Working Arithmetic
Grade 2
Third Edition (2020)

The 170 lessons in this grade are bound in 4 workbooks. Unit 1 reviews addition and subtraction facts through 10, and other skills taught in Grade 1. Unit 2 teaches all the addition and subtraction factions for the 11s, 12s, and 13s, and carrying and borrowing as well. Unit 3 teaches the 14s and 15s, and Unit 4 teaches the 16s, 17s, and 18s. Continuous review is built into the lessons, and simple reading problems are practiced frequently. Speed drills are included in the workbooks. Money, time, and measures are reviewed; pounds and ounces are introduced, along with one-dollar bills. Calendars, graphs, and quarter-hour and five-minute time increments are taught.

The teacher's manual comes in two hardcover volumes, Units 1 and 2 in Book 1, and Units 3 and 4 in Book 2. The manual is essential for class time instructions and for directions for workbooks, practice sheets, and supplemental items. A reduced copy of the pupil's lessons, speed drills, quizzes, and practice sheets are included with answers filled in.

A reproducible, supplemental pack for the course contains patterns, individual student flash cards, graphs, and "My 1,000 Book."

A total of 432 reproducible, tear-out sheets also provide extra practice for each student. These are separated into two books; quizzes for the whole course are contained in Book 1.

This hardcover textbook has 170 lessons.It reviews addition and subtraction skills from Grades 1 and 2 and teaches multiplication and division facts through table 9 and simple two- and three-step multiplication and division. Other concepts drilled are fraction meaning, measure equivalents, money values, and telling time. Mixed computation and Roman numerals are introduced.

A small tablet of speed drills provides timed practice in the basic facts. Extra practice in math facts and reading problems is provided by a set of blackline masters for teachers to copy as needed.

Progressing With Arithmetic
Grade 4

This hardcover textbook has 170 lessons, counting tests. Lesson concepts are explained in the student text. After reviewing the basic facts and teaching the multiplication and division facts 10's-12's, this book teaches long division, multiplying by 2-digit numbers, and checking in the four processes of computation. Reading problem skills include distance-rate-time, 2-step problems, using sketches, and identifying missing information. The following areas of study are also covered:

Numbers -- Place value to hundred millions, and decimals to hundredths. Roman numerals through the 300s.

Measures -- Changing measure to equivalent in other units, adding and subtracting compound measures, scale drawings, metric units of length.

Fractions -- Comparing fraction value, equivalent fractions, reducing fractions, adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers.

Geometry -- Finding perimeter and area of squares and rectangles.

Graphs -- Picture graphs and bar graphs.

Math Flash Cards -- Vertical flash cards with large numbers printed on manila card stock are available in the four operations. Addition, subraction and multiplication cards measure 3 3/8" by 7 1/2". The division cards are 4 3/8" by 5 7/8". Addition and subraction cover the 100 basic facts. Multiplication and division sets include the tables through 12. The front of each card shows a number fact, and back shows the same fact with the answer printed in a lighter shade to prevent see-through. Small print in the corner identifies the operation and the sequence of that card in the set. Each card has a cropped corner to hellp keep the set in order. A hole near the top can be used for hanging individual cards on display or for storing the pack on a nail.

Small Flash Cards -- While these economical cards can be used in a classroom, they have been specifically designed for the individual student. The cards are 4 1/4" by 2 1/8" with cropped corners to make it easy for the user to know when the cards are turned correctly. Make sets available to students to study in their spare times or to take home with them. Facts of the same family in the opposite process are on the reverse side of the cards but are arranged randomly within the family to minimize deciphering the answer. The full fact and answer are provided on the opposite side. There are 344 facts up through family 18 in addition and subtraction and 314 facts through family 12 multiplication and division.

Math Facts Speed Drill Packet -- These versatile speed drills provide an efficient way to drill number facts, regardless of the curriculum or grade level. The packet features 78 reproducible blackline sheets with 100 problems each. There are graduated levels in each of the four processes and 10 sheets with mixtures on the processes. Fact families are oriented up to the 18 family in addition and subraction and up to the 12 family in multiplication and division. An instruction manual and answer key is included.
